Traffic-responsive urban network control using multivariable regulators
The paper presents the philosophy, the aim, the development, the advantages, and the potential shortcomings of the TUC (Traffic-responsive Urban Control) strategy. Based on a store-and-forward modeling approach and using well-known methods of the Automatic Control Theory, the approach followed by TUC designs (off-line) and employs (on-line) a multivariable regulator for traffic-responsive co-ordinated network-wide signal control. Simulation investigations are used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Based on the presented investigations, summarising conclusions are drawn and future work is outlined
Positive and nodal solutions for nonlinear nonhomogeneous parametric neumann problems
We consider a parametric Neumann problem driven by a nonlinear nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential term. The reaction term is superlinear but does not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. First we prove a bifurcation-type result describing in a precise way the dependence of the set of positive solutions on the parameter λ > 0. We also show the existence of a smallest positive solution. Similar results hold for the negative solutions and in this case we have a biggest negative solution. Finally using the extremal constant sign solutions we produce a smooth nodal solution
A wideband CPW ring power combiner with low insertion loss and high port isolation
In this paper we present a coplanar waveguide (CPW)-based ring power combiner that exhibits less than 0.8 dB insertion loss, better than 15 dB port match and higher than 22 dB isolation loss over the frequency range from 50 GHz to 100 GHz. Compared with the conventional 2-way Wilkinson combiner, the proposed ring power combiner replaces the resistor between the two input ports with two quasi quarter-wave CPWs, a 180Âş CPW phase inverter, and two resistors that lead to frequency-insensitive port isolation and wideband port match. The power combiner is realized using an electron beam-based GaAs MMIC process along with simple electron beam airbridge technology. These results agree well with 3D full-wave simulations
Eigenvector Approximation Leading to Exponential Speedup of Quantum Eigenvalue Calculation
We present an efficient method for preparing the initial state required by
the eigenvalue approximation quantum algorithm of Abrams and Lloyd. Our method
can be applied when solving continuous Hermitian eigenproblems, e.g., the
Schroedinger equation, on a discrete grid. We start with a classically obtained
eigenvector for a problem discretized on a coarse grid, and we efficiently
construct, quantum mechanically, an approximation of the same eigenvector on a
fine grid. We use this approximation as the initial state for the eigenvalue
estimation algorithm, and show the relationship between its success probability
and the size of the coarse grid.Comment: 4 page
Existence and Relaxation Results for Second Order Multivalued Systems
We consider nonlinear systems driven by a general nonhomogeneous differential operator with various types of boundary conditions and with a reaction in which we have the combined effects of a maximal monotone term A(x) and of a multivalued perturbation F(t, x, y) which can be convex or nonconvex valued. We consider the cases where D(A) ≠RN and D(A) = RN and prove existence and relaxation theorems. Applications to differential variational inequalities and control systems are discussed

Evolution of Bilateral Capital Flows to Developing Countries at Intensive and Extensive Margins
The capital flows network has changed substantially, bringing new investors and target economies into play. Related, a recent intensification of capital flows to low income countries (LICs) has posed a number of questions. Most importantly, the very nature of those flows and important factors affecting foreign investors decision which can ultimately affect growth prospects of low income countries (together with an issue of sustainability) remain open for an academic probe. Due to an existence of a share of costs which is fixed in nature, there is a need to analyze capital flows and their evolution at two margins: intensive and extensive. This paper presents a parsimonious theoretical account that is consequently mapped into an econometric framework where we allow for two-tier decisions and cross-sectional dependence. Results indicate that market entry costs affect investment decisions pertinent to the LICs, consistently with the static theory. However, persistence in extensive margin eliminates this effect once dynamics is allowed for.Heterogeneous Panel
Time--Evolving Statistics of Chaotic Orbits of Conservative Maps in the Context of the Central Limit Theorem
We study chaotic orbits of conservative low--dimensional maps and present
numerical results showing that the probability density functions (pdfs) of the
sum of iterates in the large limit exhibit very interesting
time-evolving statistics. In some cases where the chaotic layers are thin and
the (positive) maximal Lyapunov exponent is small, long--lasting
quasi--stationary states (QSS) are found, whose pdfs appear to converge to
--Gaussians associated with nonextensive statistical mechanics. More
generally, however, as increases, the pdfs describe a sequence of QSS that
pass from a --Gaussian to an exponential shape and ultimately tend to a true
Gaussian, as orbits diffuse to larger chaotic domains and the phase space
dynamics becomes more uniformly ergodic.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication as a Regular Paper in

Maternal plasma sequencing: a powerful tool towards fetal whole genome recovery
Noninvasive prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal aneuploidies, although challenging, has been achieved through the implementation of novel methodologies such as methylated DNA immunoprecipitation and next generation sequencing technologies. Nevertheless, additional developments are required towards the interpretation of other fetal abnormalities of higher complexity, such as de novo mutations including microdeletion and microduplication syndromes as well as complex diseases. The application of next generation sequencing technologies towards fetal whole genome recovery has demonstrated great potential to achieve the above goal. In a research article published in Genome Medicine, Chen et al. presented a novel approach that allowed more robust and accurate characterization of parental alleles compared with previous studies. This was achieved through a revolutionary strategy based on the use of trios and unrelated individuals that simultaneously targets the interpretation of the fetal haplotype and phenotype in one step. It is hereby shown that the implementation of a more accurate experimental design in combination with proper analytical tools can provide robust noninvasive fetal whole genome recovery with the potential for further developments beyond the DNA level
Temporary device malfunction of an MR conditional cardiac resynchronization defibrillator when undergoing MRI without appropriate re-programming: a case report
Background
Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) for patients with implantable cardiac devices is becoming more routine, with the development of MR conditional devices allowing more patients access to the imaging they need. However, for this to be performed safely, strict protocols must be followed necessitating close collaboration between cardiology and radiology departments. We present a case where mandatory device re-programming of a cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator device into MRI mode was not performed pre-scan leading to temporary device dysfunction with no clinical consequences.
Case summary
A 72-year-old man presented to a device clinic for a routine device interrogation. An atrial tachycardia response episode was recorded at the same time as the patient reported having undergone an MRI scan at a local centre. The electrogram demonstrated temporary right ventricular loss of capture with standard output programming, and a short episode of oversensing on the atrial and ventricular channel which was not sustained for long enough to meet tachycardia detection.
Discussion
We demonstrate two potential electrophysiological effects of MRI on pacemakers, where the device had not been appropriately re-programmed pre-procedure. This illustrates that whilst MRI in patients with implantable cardiac devices is safe, strict protocols must be followed requiring robust multidisciplinary communication
